Blizzard has disabled Overwatch's Competitive Play mode for a brief time period.
Overwatch players saw the ranked mode's button disappear from the selection screen ahead of the new patch. Their disheartened reactions on Reddit and Tweeter aren’t surprising. But fans need not feel disappointed- it'll likely return shortly after the release of the new patch which is arriving on PC, Xbox One and PS4 very soon.
Overwatch Twitter account reads-
As we get close to patching we don't want players stuck or booted from Competitive Play matches. It'll be back soon!
Blizzard has this practice to kick players from the game whenever a new update goes live. This is their smart way to force players into the newest patch.
The removal of CP option has flooded Overwatch Reddit page with a list of complaints, all talking about losing the rank points from being kicked from a Competitive Play match. The removal of Competitive Play in advance of a scheduled patch is a canny way to sidestep these issues.
Players are still puzzled at where the Competitive Play mode went. Blizzard replied to one of the OW fans on Twitter that it is intentional and will be back soon.
As we get close to patching we don't want players stuck or booted from Competitive Play matches. It'll be back soon! - the company tweet says.
